  • Overview

    The Senior Structural Engineer will develop and direct designs for bridge projects or other transportation related structures. The Senior Structural Engineer plans and conducts work on projects requiring independent judgment and evaluation, and adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria. Makes decisions independently on engineering problems and methods, and represents the organization in project meetings in order to resolve important questions and to plan and coordinate work. Applies intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of structural engineering assignments and related fields.

    Clients will include bridge work for New York City Department of Transportation and New York State Departments of Transportation, Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority (TBTA), NYC Department of Design and Construction, and Port Authority of NY/NJ. Transit work may include structures for New York City Transit, Port Authority/PATH, New Jersey Transit, Long Island Railroad and/or other Railroads. Candidate must be demonstrably familiar with codes and standards related to structural design for some or all of these agencies.

    The candidate will assist in structural analysis and design activities, preparation of plan sheets using CADD, quantity estimates, inspection of structures and preparation of reports. Must be able to multi-task and contribute with project teams to perform work to meet/exceed client expectations. Must be capable of working with other technical design staff in a multi-discipline team environment and directing in-house junior staff.


    • Acts in a technical supervisory capacity and provides direction to a team of structural engineers.
    • Plans, develops, coordinates, and directs structural engineering projects and assignments.
    • Works independently and is proficient in running various technical aspects of a project
    • Prepares design models and calculations for various structural elements including bridge superstructure, substructure, retaining walls, structural steel and concrete members using various software packages
    • Serves as structural engineering technical leader on large multi-disciplinary projects.
    • Supervises and prepares the development of contract documents, including plans, specifications and quantity/cost estimates.
    • Serves as technical interface with clients, where requested
    • Assists in confirming scope, schedule, budget, and resources needed.
    • Provides task assignment input weekly (daily if needed) and follows budget guidelines that are provided.
    • Follows schedule guidelines. Assumes responsibility for multi-task deliverable production on projects. Provides progress report input when requested.
    • Follows communications plan that includes guidelines for internal and external distribution as directed.
    • Carries out QA/QC plan requirements and follows plan for document control. Conducts Quality Control reviews when requested
    • Keeps company personnel abreast of changes to codes and standards



    Bachelor’s Degree in Structural/Civil Engineering required; Master's Degree preferred. Minimum 8 – 10 years of experience is required in design of bridge and/or transit structures, and use of CADD (Microstation and Autocad) for plan production. PE license (New York State) is required. Knowledge of reinforced concrete and steel design in accordance with current codes is required. Experience with various software packages for analysis and design such as CSI Bridge, SAP, LARSA, STAAD is required. Strong organizational, oral and written communication skills are essential.
