Overview

The Structural Engineer will perform structural engineering design tasks for structural systems for bridges, transit facilities and site and highway facilities. Must be familiar with structural design methods, codes, standards and design computer programs such as STAAD, CSI Bridge, SAP2000, MathCAD and other structural design packages.

 

Clients will include bridge, street and utility work for New York City Department of Transportation, New York City and New York State Departments of Transportation, Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority (TBTA), NYC Department of Design and Construction, and Port Authority of NY/NJ. Transit work may include work for New York City Transit, Port Authority/PATH, New Jersey Transit, Long Island Railroad and/or other Railroads.

The candidate will assist in structural analysis and design activities, preparation of plan sheets using CADD, quantity estimates, inspection of structures and preparation of reports. Must be able to multi-task and contribute with project teams to perform work to meet/exceed client expectations. Must be capable of working with other technical design staff in a multi-discipline team environment and directing in-house junior staff.

Responsibilities

  • Working independently on technical engineering assignments.
  • Providing support to Design Team leaders.
  • Perform structural calculations (steel, concrete and timber).
  • Prepares design models and calculations for various structural elements including bridge superstructure, substructure, retaining walls, structural steel and concrete members using various software packages.
  • Perform field investigations and surveys.
  • Conduct analysis and design for deep and shallow foundation systems.
  • Develop project standards and specifications.
  • Prepare preliminary and final designs from field notes and date files.
  • Provide quantity and cost estimates.
  • Provide responses to technical inquiries.
  • Assist in development of design concepts and reports.
  • Review shop drawings, construction methods and operational procedures.
  • Prepare production drawings utilizing AutoCad and/or Microstation.
  • Perform field investigations.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering required; Master's Degree preferred. Minimum of 4 - 8 years of experience is required in design of bridge and/or transit structures, and use of CADD for plan production. EIT certification required, PE a plus, or and ability to obtain PE licensing in the future (if not already obtained). Knowledge of reinforced concrete, steel design in accordance with current codes is required. Strong organizational, oral and written communication skills are essential.
