Overview

T.Y. Lin International Group is seeking an Associate Corporate Counsel to assist our Legal, Compliance and Risk Department in managing a broad range of claims and litigation, contracting, and risk matters for the global operations of T.Y. Lin International Group and its affiliates. Candidates should have considerable prior experience with managing complex claims and litigation; experience litigating cases and handling claims in the engineering and construction field is strongly preferred. The Associate Corporate Counsel will be tasked with managing outside counsel, claims, and the insurance carriers and policies relevant thereto. S/he will report directly to Corporate Counsel and may supervise staff. In addition, s/he will provide direction to T.Y. Lin International Group attorneys located throughout the world to assess the potential liability of claims and litigation. Another key role s/he will play is to draft, review, and negotiate various professional services contracts, and other types of contracts and documents with legal significance.

The ideal candidate will be someone who has leadership characteristics, will be a team-oriented player who can interact comfortably with a wide variety of team members including international team members. S/he will be strategic as well as tactical; highly detail oriented and organized, but also creative.

Responsibilities

 

• Provide rapid, practical, business-oriented, and risk-aware legal advice to business clients.
• Manage and assist with all aspects of the claims and litigation process, including assessing risk, developing strategy, reviewing pleadings, discovery, partnering with outside counsel, insurance representatives, and internal stakeholders as needed.
• Direct administrative work relating to claims and litigation.
• Draft, review, and negotiate various professional services contracts, and other types of contracts and documents with legal significance.
• Assist internal clients with matters relating to our standard contract templates and agreements already in place with external clients.
• Ensure that the company’s litigation database and calendar is kept current and will be responsible for managing T.Y. Lin International Group’s electronic discovery requirements and eDiscovery processes.
• Regularly interface with insurance carriers and claim adjustors and build and maintain those relationships.
• Handle the following functions and activities with guidance from Corporate Counsel and increasingly independently over time:
o Support project personnel to proactively identify, assess, and mitigate risks and advise on dispute avoidance and risk mitigation strategies.
o Support contracting, risk, and compliance efforts.
o Partnering with clients across functional teams such as Finance & Accounting, Tax, Human Resources, Marketing, senior management, and other internal teams.
• Regularly contribute to and refine the company’s templates, playbooks, and guidance documents.
• Maintain active participation in professional societies to keep abreast of relevant legal and compliance issues.
• Perform other duties as needed.

Qualifications


• A J.D. from an accredited law school, a solid academic background, and an active license to practice law.
• Licensed to practice law in a U.S. state; California Bar preferred.
• 5 + years of legal experience practicing law in a law firm and/or in house specializing in managing complex litigation/claims/arbitration.
• Experienced in managing outside counsel and supervising staff.
• Contract negotiation experience in a law firm for clients in the professional services field and/or as part of a corporate legal department within a professional services company.
• Experience in a global, multi-cultural environment, including experience managing complex cross-border claims and litigation.
• Exposure to construction and engineering disputes.
• Experience dealing with insurance carriers.
• Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Business and/or legal Spanish language fluency is a plus.
